Pennsylvania Bluestone

Did you know Pennsylvania Bluestone, the beautiful blue colored slate so common in our area is found only in the northeastern tier of Pennsylvania, parts of northern New Jersey and the southern tier of New York? It is cut from quarries and has many uses, including patios, walkways and stair treads and is also featured in many buildings, according to the Pennsylvania Bluestone Association. The name Pennsylvania Bluestone is due to its predominantly blue color and because the majority of stone is quarried in Pennsylvania. Blue is a bit of a misnomer, because it can come in many other earthy shades including buff, tan, gray, green and even purple. It was formed over 360,000,000 years ago and is composed of feldspar, sand, and mica.
You can find Bluestone sidewalks, curbs and buildings along the East. Famous buildings made from Bluestone include the Statue of Liberty, USA Today Building, and New York Yankees Stadium.Join Our Newsletter
