Should you use Stamped Concrete for your new Patio?

Posted March 12, 2020 in Patio and Walkway

Installing a patio in your backyard is a big decision, and when your patio is designed and built properly it can help increase the value of your home. If you are considering adding a patio to your home, you might be choosing between concrete pavers or stamped concrete. But, if you cannot envision what your concrete selections will look like and have no idea what they should cost, you are probably feeling worried that you will select the wrong concrete for your patio.

At MasterPLAN Outdoor Living we believe that you deserve a patio that you are proud of and makes the most sense for your family and your property!

Before you make a decision on your new patio’s concrete selection, check out these stamped concrete design secrets that your patio contractor doesn’t know:

Benefits of choosing Stamped Concrete for your Patio Design

  • Longevity: Aesthetically pleasing and durable long term option for your patio design that can add a ton of value to your home.
  • Wide Selection:  A wide variety of colors, patterns, and textures of stamped concrete are available and they can typically mimic most hardscape surfaces such as slate or natural stone.
  • Low maintenance: Since a stamped concrete patio is one continuous piece of concrete weeds will not grow through the joints.

Cons of choosing Stamped Concrete for your Patio Design

  • Doesn’t fool the trained eye: While stamped concrete closely resembles other hardscape materials such as slate and natural stone, it is still just a simulation.  Stamped concrete is an attractive solution for a patio, but it is hardly ever mistaken for the real deal.
  • Still prone to cracking: Since stamped concrete is one continuous hardscape it has no room for movement. It will require saw cut relief joints that serve as predicted guidelines for the cracks to follow, but not all relief joints can be blended into your stamped concrete pattern which could make them obvious.
  • Color Matching Challenge: If your stamped concrete patio suffers damage and chips, it can be very hard to match the original color for your repair.  Stamped concrete patios are colored in a phased process when installed, and to recreate that color layering exactly is nearly impossible.
